FINGER -ST ( pre-punk sloppiness of the New York Dollsmelded with the refinement of Hanoi Rocks.)Label:SKYCLAD 2000 REISSUE OF E.F.'S 1998 LIVE ON WFMUALBUM. inger (the American album reprises five cuts from the Britishseven-songer) is worth searching for, worth owning and doubly worth preserving.Led by singer/guitarist Brad Rice, the band demonstrates an uncanny ability toshift comfortably into and out of a number of musical styles without losing anyof its identity as a sharp, learned and elastic-tight 4 4 rock’n’roll band. Theopening “Alice” sounds a bit like the pre-punk sloppiness of the New York Dollsmelded with the refinement of Hanoi Rocks. On “Daddy-Oh,” Finger’s referencepoint is the sort of slovenly southern college rock associated with Athens,Georgia. From there, songs like “Drive By” and “Vessel” head into the kind ofstraight-on, sincere and unfettered bash’n’crash bands like the Goo Goo Dollshie to. Two years in the (sporadic) making, Finger is a near-perfect blend oftremendous songwriting and a gritty, muddy recording quality that keeps everythinghonest. CD $10 SKU:27246

LEGENDS, THE- High Towers DBL CD ( 60's psych ) - Label:ARF ARF Featuring their four locally released singlesand a promotional-onlyflexi from 1970, the first CD documents the Legends from1967 to 1973, their most renowned era. But the listening pleasure doesn't endwith rare 45 sides like the stompin' freakbeat cover of "Baby Get YourHead Screwed On" from '67 and the quirky wah-wah piano of "HighTowers" from '69. CD number one is rounded out by a bevy of previouslyunreleased material, including seven more power-trio psych-outs from 1969,three pounding hard rockers from 1973 that should have the stoner rock crowd inair-guitar heaven, and even a CD-ROM of a video made by band ally Jerry KingMusser in 1972 to promote "Rock and Roll Woman," a regional smash(later licensed to Epic Records) that almost got the Legends on AmericanBandstand. Some people know 'em as the spawning ground for Dan Hartman of EdgarWinter Free Ride/I Can Dream About You fame. Other people know 'em for theirfour excellent singles. But until you've heard Arf! Arf! Records' new double-CDHigh Towers compilation retrospective, you haven't gotten the full perspectiveon the Legends. From '64 to '73, the Legends were as synonymous with CentralPennsylvania as a Hershey Bar with almonds, and every bit as tasty. They gotthe audiences dancing with their mix of pop, rock and soul in the mid-'60s,freaked 'em out with heavy psychedelia in the late '60s, then rocked 'em backoutta their shells with even harder rock in the early '70s. All phases aredocumented on High Towers, which traces the rise of the Legends from theirgarage band roots playing teen hops and fire halls into seasoned rockersblowing the doors off larger venues. Featuring their four locally releasedsingles and a promotional-only flexi from 1970, the first CD documents theLegends from 1967 to 1973, their most renowned era. But the listening pleasuredoesn't end with rare 45 sides like the stompin' freakbeat cover of Baby GetYour Head Screwed On from '67 and the quirky wah-wah piano of High Towers from'69. CD number one is rounded out by a bevy of previously unreleased material, including seven more power-trio psych-outs from 1969, three pounding hardrockers from 1973 that should have the stoner rock crowd in air-guitar heaven, and even a CD-ROM of a video made by band ally Jerry King Musser in 1972 topromote Rock and Roll Woman, a regional smash (later licensed to Epic Records)that almost got the Legends on American Bandstand. And then there's the secondCD, which throws a life preserver to those '60s fanatics who abandon ship whenthe captain's into psychedelia or hard rock. Fear not, garage fiends, as CDnumber two completes the Legends' voyage with 26 previously unissued cuts from1965 and 1966, including a few band originals and teen-fueled renditions ofShakin' All Over, You Really Got Me I Need You, Don't Bring Me Down and eventhe Shadows of Knight's fuzz ripper, I'm Gonna Make You Mine. Perhaps thecoolest garage vault find of all, however, is a pair of cuts by the Donshires(featuring future Legend Joe Caloiero) from 1965, Sad and Blue and Tripeline, which would be lighting up eBay if the songs had ever been pressed on a single. The musical experience is only enhanced by a 24-page booklet lined withpictures, memorabilia and a detailed band history (including interviews withsix former members) by Doug Sheppard of Discoveries/Ugly Things. Whether you'reinto garage, psych, hard rock or even Dan Hartman himself, High Towers isguaranteed to scale the rock and roll heights for you. CD $14 SKU:27010

MICHIGAN MAYHEM!- Vol 1 (top notch 60S compilation, featuring garage, psych and hard rockentries)Label:MORE FUN 28 forgotten60’s Michigan garage gems. TRACKS: SweetCherry – Eight Day Blues, Blues Co. – Love Machine, Illusions – City Of People,James T. & The Workers – I Can’t Stop, Quests – Scream Loud, Outcry – Can’tYou Hear, Psychotics – If You Don’t Believe Me Don’t, Chevrons – Hey LittleTeaser, Grifs – Catch A Ride, Undecided – Make Her Cry, Aardvarks – I’m HigherThan I’m Down, Black Rose – Love Handles, Pagens – Mystic Cloud, Jammers –You’re Gonna Love Me Too, Ebb Tides – Séance, Terry Knight & The Pack – HowMuch More, Olivers – I Saw What You Did, Quests – I’m Tempted, 9th StreetMarket – I’m A Baby, Beaubiens – Times Passed, Rationals – Little Girls Cry,Sweet Cherry – Funny Things Floating, 9th Street Market – You’re Gone, Ruby –Confusion, The Old Exciting Scot Richard Case – Get The Picture, Rationals – INeed You (alternate take), Ascots – So Good, and Pleasure Seekers – What A WayTo Die. DESCRIPTION: For fans ofriff-driven, raw garage rock, Michigan Mayhem Vol. 1 is a good place to start. Most of the tracks on this are good and it's a fairly eclectic compilation—fromthe acid rock of Black Rose to the psych-pop of the Pagens to the to theR&B-influenced garage rock of the Rationals to the countrified homage to beerby the Pleasure Seekers. Not all of the tracks on Michigan Mayhem Vol. 1 workbut the range of styles represented here makes this compilation an interestingand essential documentation of the time period. Seance by the Ebb Tide providesan example of the low-budget horror film music that a number garage revivalbands focused on several years later. I'm not sure why this was the case—musiclike this too often just plods along. The last track in this collection What aWay to Die by the Pleasure Seekers is notable because they were an all-femaleband with a young Suzi Quatro on bass. The song asks her boyfriend not to makeher choose between him or beer, which she loves above all, apparently. Thetitle comes from the acknowledgement that beer does not lead to a healthylifestyle, "I may not make it to 21 but what a way to die" (Hey,remember when alcoholism was funny?) The flip side of this single is muchbetter but not included here. Both sides of the Pleasure Seekers' single areavailable (with much better sound quality) on the compilation Friday at theHideout, but that's not to say that Friday at the Hideout is a bettercompilation than this one. The driving, infectious garage rock on MichiganMayhem Vol. 1 more than compensates for its occasional inconsistency andless-than-perfect audio quality. As indicated in the title, all of the bands onthis compilation came from Michigan, which had thriving scenes of all sorts ofmusic, particularly in Detroit. Perhaps what makes Michigan such a good sourceof garage rock of the sort on this compilation is that it incorporates eclecticinfluences while still retaining the inspired amateurism of garage rock. Highlyrecommended! COMP CD $10 SKU:27046

ULTRA CHICKS - VOL 2 - VOL 2 lolita ( 60s French pop ) - Label:MATRIX
French-language, female-sung '60s popand rock on this 24-track collection, subtitled "Lolita Ya-Ya!" Not aname here that'll be familiar to anyone except the French and hard-bittencollectors of the ye-ye style, although there's a novelty song by actress AnnaKarina (Serge Gainsbourg's knowingly ludicrous "Roller Girl," whichdespite the title is in French). You might also recognize the name GillianHills, the British actress who starred in Beat Girl, and who offers one of thebest songs, a pretty bluesy, menacing item called "Maintenant IlTelephone." Much of this sounds caught between lightweight early-'60stwist music, continental European pop, and mid-'60s mod rock (there's somepretty scorching guitar and organ), performed by one-named singers such asDani, Ariane, Aline, Elsa, Clothilde, Cleo, Eileen, and Joanna.
