The International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen 2024 will be awarded to Pinchas Goldschmidt and the Jewish people in Europe. #karlspreis2024In the person of the President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt – alongside the Jewish people in Europe – the Board of Directors of the Society for the Conferring of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen in 2024 honours an outstanding representative of European Judaism and Jewish life in Europe, which has enriched our continent for centuries and for which there will and must always be a place here.Goldschmidt is recognised for his outstanding efforts to promote peace, the right of all peoples to self-determination, European values, tolerance, pluralism and understanding, and his significant commitment to interreligious and intercultural dialogue.There is no place for antisemitism in Europe. Jewish life is an essential part of Europe's past, its present and its future.The award ceremony will be held at the historic Town Hall of the City of Aachen on May 9. Über 500 Gäste fanden sich am Dienstagabend im Krönungssaal des Aachener Rathauses ein, um den leidenschaftlichen Worten von Michel Friedman zu lauschen. Mit beeindruckender Überzeugungskraft plädierte er für Demokratie und den Kampf gegen Antisemitismus.Friedman betonte, dass der Einsatz für Demokratie im Kleinen beginnt - sei es im Verein, in der Familie oder bei einem Dinner mit Freunden. Es ist wichtig, für seine Überzeugungen einzustehen, auch wenn es Gegenwind gibt. ONE WEEK TO GO 🏅On May 9, the Charlemagne Prize 2024 will be awarded to Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt and the Jewish people in Europe.With this accolade, we wish to broadcast the message that Jewish life is a natural part of Europe, and that there is no place for antisemitism in Europe.👉 But who is the laureate Pinchas Goldschmidt? ▶ Pinchas Goldschmidt was born in Zurich in 1963. His great-grandparents, Jacob and Miriam Schwartz, were deported from Hungary to Auschwitz during the Holocaust.▶ After intensive rabbinical studies in Israel and the USA, Goldschmidt, at the young age of 25, went to the Soviet Union in 1989 to rebuild Jewish community life there. In 1993, he became the Chief Rabbi of Moscow in Russia.▶ The Conference of European Rabbis (CER), comprising over 700 rabbis from Ireland to Russia, elected him as its president in 2011, making him the highest representative of European Jewry.▶ In 2015, Goldschmidt co-founded the European Muslim-Jewish Leadership Council (MJLC) to foster dialogue between Europe's 1.5 million Jews and 40 million Muslims. He also promotes Jewish-Christian dialogue and meets regularly with Pope Francis.▶ When the Russian regime tried to compel him in 2022 to show solidarity with Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine, he refused and left Russia. Since the CER relocated its headquarters from London to Munich due to Brexit in 2023, Goldschmidt has been living in Munich.#Karlspreis2024

Eine Vergewisserung, was 2000 Jahre jüdischer Präsenz in Europa bedeuten: Jüdinnen und Juden sind seit jeher ein integraler Teil europäischer Gesellschaften – trotz der Angriffe durch den russischen Angriffskrieg, trotz des Tsunami des Antisemitismus nach dem 7.10.2023 auch auf dem europäischen Kontinent, auch in Deutschland“, kommentierte Volker Beck die Wahl der diesjährigen Karlspreisträger.👉 Knapp 2,5 Jahrzehnte gehörte der gebürtige Stuttgarter von 1994 bis 2017 für Bündnis 90/Die Grünen dem Deutschen Bundestag an, wo er sich vor allem innen-, rechts- und menschenrechtspolitischen Fragen widmete. Seit 2022 ist er Präsident der Deutsch-Israelischen Gesellschaft, der zentralen überparteilichen Organisation in Deutschland, in der Freunde Israels zusammenarbeiten, sich für Solidarität mit dem jüdischen und demokratischen Staat engagieren und Antisemitismus bekämpfen.In Aachen spricht Beck über die Zäsur des 7.
