Sailor Moon's Finale Movie Sets Streaming Premiere on Netflix (2024)

Netflix will host the finale of the Sailor Moon anime remake, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie. Scheduled for release on August 22, 2024, this will be the first time the movie is available for streaming.

These visuals feature iconic characters including Sailor Moon, the Sailor Guardians, and the Sailor Starlights. The movie promises to spotlight the "Shadow Galactica" arc, a critical chapter in the Sailor Moon saga.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie represents the first installment of a two-part conclusion to the "Stars" arc, completing the series’ latest adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi’s beloved manga. The film first premiered in Japan in June 2023, brought to life by director Tomoya Takahashi and screenwriter Kazuyuki Fudeyasu.

In other news that will delight fans, the official Sailor Moon Store has released a new mug that features chibi art designs of all ten Sailor Guardians just recently. During an interview with Japanese magazine Chuo Koron, Washio shared insights into how the portrayal of "fighting girls" in anime has shifted dramatically since the days of Sailor Moon. His work, particularly on the groundbreaking series Futari wa Pretty Cure, represents a distinct departure from the earlier magical girl storylines.

The debut of Futari wa Pretty Cure revolutionized the genre by introducing protagonists Misumi Nagisa and Yukishiro Honoka who engaged in direct physical combat with adversaries, a stark contrast to their predecessors who relied on magical powers. This series notably eschewed the typical fairy tale motifs and romantic plots centered around finding a "prince" that were prevalent in their genre contemporaries.

In the interview, the discussion inevitably turned to the differences between Futari wa Pretty Cure and Sailor Moon. The latter featured characters like Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon herself), who were often depicted as being preoccupied with romance, notably with the enigmatic Tuxedo Mask, and wielded more traditionally 'feminine' forms of weaponry.

"It may be similar in the sense that the main character is a fighting girl. But because the broadcast times were different, I think the way women are perceived as characters and the main character's principles of action have changed considerably to reflect the times."
