Doubled the watermelon & added only 2c water; juice of 1 lemon, handful of basil, about 8 ice cubes. Didn't strain out the healthy fiber or add more water. No need to refrigerate before serving over ice. 4 generous servings @ 16 oz each.

I don’t add water at all. Just blend the watermelon lightly, strain and push on the pulp to get more juice out, add lime juice and a little sugar, pour it into a pitcher and refrigerate. When I’m ready to serve, I’ll blend the mixture with ice (and perhaps a little alcohol) and garnish with lime. So refreshing!

Adri

This makes it more of a smoothie and no longer an authentic Agua Fresca.

When I find the watermelon a little over-riped, I blend it with lemon or lime juice whichever I happen to have at the time. No water, no sugar but lemon/lime needed.
Then let the feast begin..all day long...tall glass with thick straw!! With fibers and all. Ahhh...Best part is there are more waiting in fridge, worst part is you CAN finish the whole melon in a day!!

AnnieLa

I made it but added a pinch of salt. It balances it and gives it depth.

Basil? Sounds good. Actually last year, ate a wedding cake that had basil and it was spectacular!

JB

You can substitute lemon juice, too. Either one helps it last longer. I leave the pulp, too, and just stir when pouring.

Amy DiLaura

i used 3 cups of water and it was way to thin.

Margaret

Much too watery with amount of liquid as written. I'd cut it in half to make the kind of agua fresca I'm used to, with more flavor.

sylvia

Had a really sweet large watermelon, added no water, no sugar, no lemon or lime and oooohh it was soooo good. Just that melon made a whole gallon!

Joan

Have you ever tried it with mint instead of basil - delicious!P

As per comments, I added 6 small genovese basil leaves a pinch of coarse sea salt. After a few tries, we determined that we prefer to use less water initially (just to help with blending) and allow each individual to add water as they prefer. I added still water, and I loved it. My husband added sparkling water, and it was out of this world good. Letting it sit in fridge before serving seemed to enhance flavour.

I used a wee bit of agave sweetener instead of sugar with a slightly over-ripe cantaloupe for a delightful agua fresca. Added a sprig of fresh mint. Perfect!

Andy K

It makes a great base for a drink with tequila or rum!

I made this last minute, doubling it for a get together we had. I used 8 cups of watermelon, 2 cups of water, juice of one lime and 2 tablespoons of sugar, straining it after it was blended. It was a hit with the teenagers and young adults who aren't able to drink yet.

Carrie

I just used 1 1/2 cups water, and doubled the sugar, otherwise it was tasting a bit bland. The kids loved this. This is a recipe you can certainly tweak to your taste.

Amazing

In my initial try I used cantaloupe a few tablespoons of sugar and lemon juice. I processed it in my high speed blender and refrigerated the mixture. I added cold water and ice prior to serving. I used fresh pineapple on my second try with the same portions of lemon juice and sugar. A great and easy recipe. This has not been a good year for watermelon in my part of the world so I am learning to use what’s available. At the moment, two beautiful ripe pineapples await transition to this drink.

I use less water and then pour over ice and vodka. A lovelyAnd refreshing by the pool drink to escape modern life with.

lelanie

if you are cutting up a whole watermelon add 2-3 table spoons of sugar and 3 1/2 cups of water

Hannah

Super great way to use up some very ripe watermelon. Decided to leave out the sugar and add a handful of mint, and it was delicious!

AnnieLa

Decreased the water and doubled the sugar but my melon was not the greatest.
