"matt has a girlfriend."

caro was right. hearing these words did send her into anaphylactic shock. she audibly gasped and practically threw her phone onto her bed. usually these types of situations aren't such a big deal, but it was with matt. the matt that made a very specific promise that he swore to never break.

as freshman year was coming to its finals closes, and summer could be seen clear as day, everything was perfect. thalia had perfect friends, perfect grades, a perfect home life, and a perfect matt. especially a perfect matt.

her matt had been getting so close recently, and she had even made two other automatic friends. his brothers nick and chris. they were the best group. she also made friends with their best friend nate. nate was cool, he played hockey with nick.

anyways, it was like nobody could ever interfere with them. they were practically spongebob, patrick, mr krabs, squidward, and sandy. they had an untouchable bond.

one day, when they were all eating lunch together, a girl walked over to their table and started talking to matt.

"uhm, hey. matt right?" she asked, nervously twiddling with her hair. matt doesn't like that. he says it makes him feel bad because it resembles girls being nervous to talk to him.

"yeah, that's me. what's up?" he says somehow nonchalantly. usually stuff like this happens to chris and nate. even nick even though he's literally gay. but it didn't happen to matt very often, so everyone at the table was pretty surprised at her visit.

"my names jaimie. i was just coming over because i thought you were cute and.. i wanted to know if you'd want to hang out sometime?" she asked with a shoulder shrug and furrowed eyebrows.

big red flag. thalia probably knew that before matt did. for one, he hated when girls asked him out. he never really wanted a relationship and it made him uncomfortable when a girl would ask him- especially in a public setting, because he hated rejecting them. so he had his go to response.

"you seem so sweet, but im sorry i have a girlfriend." he said, looking over to thalia and grinning slightly. he then looked back to the girl and said, "have a great day tho, jaimie."

they had been doing this for a couple years, ever since it first happened and matt was forced to go mini golfing with a girl he really wasn't interested in. i mean, she had matted hair with glasses and braces. total opposite of his vibe, but he felt bad. after that, however, they both decided it would be best to have some kind of excuse to avoid that situation as much as possible.

so, they made a pinky promise.

nowadays, pink promises are lame and don't mean much. they are commonly broken. almost expected to be betrayed and disrespected. but back then, things were different. in their own little way, pink promises meant everything. and i mean everything. they meant that for the rest of their lives, they would never break that promise. they would hold onto it until they hit the coffin type sh*t. it was a huge deal. so, when they made the promise, they kept it. their promise was that no matter who comes to either matt or tal, they would call each other their significant other to avoid either form being humiliated. and to this day, they kept that promise. but there was another that they made that meant so much more to thalia than any book or movie to ever exist. it meant more to her than her existence, even.

one day, a really pretty girl came over to matt. obviously, everyone knew what was about to happen. the usual ritual took place. the girl asked him out, he said he was dating thalia, blah blah blah. but this girl, she was a pusher. she didn't want to give up.
